Fall 2007

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Immigration used to be a topic for social studies classes, a sometimes nostalgic reflection on how America came to be through successive waves of peoples from around the world coming to settle this land. Today this subject evokes a broad range of emotions sparked by words like illegals, crackdown, guest workers, state compliance, showdowns and border fence. If you are confused by the rhetoric, come listen to the facts on October 16 when the Cocheco Forum will present a conversation on immigration. The event gets under way at 7 pm at the Dover Public Library, 73 Locust Street and is free and open to the public. Speakers will present legal, social and political and social dimensions of one of the biggest domestic problems facing the United States. Their perspectives will range from area and state concern to national policies. Join in the conversation, and share your concerns and insights.
